A tall, graceful woman dressed in Rwandan traditional  dress for festivities, the mushanana, is on her way to a wedding, carrying the gift in the special basket balance on her head, known as an “agaseke.”  The agaseke is Rwanda’s oldest traditional basket, featured in the Rwandan coat of arms.  Known as the “peace” basket and the “wedding” basket, the agaseke is a symbol of generosity, compassion, gratitude, and friendship.  Gifts are often given inside the agaseke, and it can be used for storing valuables, for decorative purposes, and for other traditional practices.
