A young silverback mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) intently peers out from his perch in the lush foliage. Rwanda is one of the only places where these gentle primates may be viewed in safety. Proceeds from Rwanda’s successful ecotourism industry fund the training of rangers and a developing national park infrastructure that has reduced poaching and helped dwindling populations of mountain gorillas to rebound in recent years, although they are still endangered.
