Two young women clad in traditional Rwandan swimsuits made of leather return from bathing in the river, bringing with them fresh water for the home. Historically—-and before the widespread adoption of Catholicism in Rwanda—-it was not considered immodest for young, unmarried women to go bare-breasted. Only after marriage were they required to cover up.
