Three Twa hunters bend their bows into a blue sky, their flowing garments and lithe frames rendered in subtle hues. The Twa are Rwanda’s indigenous hunter-gatherers who lived in harmony with their environment for more than 60,000 years. Today, the great forests have dwindled because of population pressure and war, and the Twa are left without land or livelihood. Some have become potters, but others still try to gather honey, medicine, and food from what remains of the ancient forests. One third of the Twa population (about 10,000 people) died in the genocide.
