The Royal Drummers held a position of high status in the king’s court during the period of Rwanda’s monarchy, which began around 1000 CE. Traditionally, the drummers were men, in part because the drums require great physical strength. One way Rwandans preserve their cultural heritage today is to keep alive the art of these huge drums. However, today Rwandan women also play. This lively embroidery depicts such a mixed drum ensemble.
