Rwanda is one of the only places where the silverback mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) may be viewed in safety. Proceeds from Rwanda’s successful ecotourism industry fund trained rangers and a developing national park infrastructure that have reduced poaching and helped dwindling populations of mountain gorillas to rebound in recent years, although this gentle primate is still endangered.
