The two-dimensionality and stylized mille-fleur background of this piece make it reminiscent of a medieval tapestry. Sadly, all of Rwanda’s remaining lions were killed during the 1994 Genocide, but in June of 2015, seven lions—two males and five females—were brought to Rwanda from South Africa. After a brief quarantine, they will be reintroduced to the 276,800 acre Akagera National Park, marking an important milestone in conservation for both the park and the country of Rwanda.
