Three hunters set out on their quest for game. They wear red, which was believed to keep them safe from animal attacks. The landscape is rendered in great detail, especially the grasses at their feet, which contain many shades of green, yellow and brown. The Twa are the original hunter-gatherers who inhabited the land known as Rwanda for thousands of years. In recent years, as the wildlife has been depleted and what is left is protected in Rwanda’s national parks, the Twa have been forced into other livelihoods. Often they are potters, but are among the poorest of the segments of Rwandan society.
