A group of energetic Rwandan children dance to the liberating beat of drums. The composition is framed by the woven fence or rugo and the vibrant greens of a row of palm trees that delineates the border of the family compound. Drums have always been an essential part of Rwandan music and dance. Usually the large Rwandan drums are played by groups of seven to nine male musicians, but in modern times women too have become skilled in drumming.
